The Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons

West Yorkshire

The Leeds and District Installed Masters Association. A.G.M. 2016

A most welcome Fish and Chip supper was provided to those who attended the Annual General Meeting of the Leeds and District Association of Installed Masters, which took place on Thursday, 21st July at the Masonic Hall in Wetherby.

The opening formalities concluded, the President, Worshipful Brother Craig Kidd addressed the meeting. He said that it had been a privilege to be the President and he had thoroughly enjoyed his year in Office, this was delivered with enthusiasm and suggested that given half a chance he would have gone on for another year. He had visited all the Lodges except one, coincidentally that being Ainsty Lodge of Mark Master Masons No.1739, who meet at Wetherby. A successful Social event had been well attended and he thanked all for their support. This was partially responsible for a generous cheque to the West Yorkshire Mark Benevolent Fund which was presented to the Deputy Provincial Grand Master. He then announced a new initiative in that a report of all Association meetings will be provided to all Brethren and a copy of the Bye laws given to each new candidate; sound thinking and I will be surprised if this is not followed by the sister Associations but maybe some of them do it now and I am unaware!!

In his report as Secretary, W. Bro. Richard Brown emphasised that the role of the Association Lodge Representatives is now pivotal and that it is vital that they ensure that Brethren are fully aware of developments and events related to the Festival. Additionally they should encourage Worshipful Masters and their Wardens to attend the Annual Meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons West Yorkshire to be held at Bradford on Saturday, 22nd April 2017, accompanied by Brethren.

The President then invested his successor wishing him a very happy and successful year in Office, the new Team being;

President, W.Bro. Keith Harmer, Haywra Lodge.

Senior Vice President, W.Bro. Richard Brown, St Chad Lodge

Junior Vice President, W.Bro. Brian Smart, Claro Lodge.

W.Bro. Richard Brown was appointed as Secretary; yes he is going to do both jobs for one year due to unforeseen circumstances. W.Bro. Les Davy was re appointed as Treasurer with W. Bro. Ian Tillett continuing as Assistant Secretary and W.Bro. David Todd continuing as Assistant Treasurer.

Bro. Keith is a conscientious, committed Mason who is not given to leaving much to chance. Accordingly he had already prepared a detailed list of visits and Social events. These will be covered in the Association calendar which will be issued in the next 2 months. For the record , however, a Sunday Luncheon will be held at Harrogate on the 6th November, a Gala on Saturday 17th June 2017 and the Annual General meeting in 2017 will be on Thursday July 20th 2017 at Harrogate. He is also committed to attending every Installation other than Pontefract No. 878, this coincides with other Masonic business.

The Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Worshipful Brother Richard Boswell Puttrell then addressed the meeting and began by congratulating the President and his newly installed Team; also thanking W. Bro. Craig for all that he had done over the past year. He confirmed the comments made by the Secretary in respect of the Installed Masters Associations being pivotal in respect of the West Yorkshire Mark Benevolent Fund Festival but, in addition, encouraged us all to get the Ladies and families involved. This is key for Freemasonry in general as we must be seen to embrace modern man and his family in a society far different from that when I became a Freemason back in 1981.

Bradford and District Installed Masters Association, Annual General Meeting 2016

The 34th Annual General Meeting of the Bradford and District Installed Masters Association was held on Wednesday, 11 May at Haworth Masonic Hall.

The meeting was opened by the President, Worshipful Brother Clive Hawkins who welcomed the Provincial Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother James Steggles and the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Worshipful Brother Richard Boswell Puttrell.

The minutes of the 33rd Annual General Meeting having been approved, the President addressed the meeting. He had thoroughly enjoyed his year, visiting throughout the area, an experience that he will cherish for some considerable time. The only downside was the lack of support from Masters in the Chair where he could not recall any meeting where there were more than three Representatives from Lodges in the Bradford and District Installed Masters Association. Hopefully his comments will be taken on board and attendance will significantly improve in the next 12 months.

R. W. Bro. James Steggles G.M.R.A.C. then spoke to the meeting saying that he was delighted to be attending and congratulated the President, in absentia, together with his Senior and Junior Vice Presidents as well as the Secretariat on their appointments. He also thanked the Immediate Past President, W.Bro. Clive on his hard work throughout the year. He then remarked that it was important for Masters in the Chair to recognise the important obligation they accepted when attaining that high honour. Specifically that of representing their Lodge throughout their Association, attending Association visits and the Annual General Meeting and, if possible together with his Wardens, the Annual Meeting of the Provincial Grand of Mark Master Masons , West Yorkshire. I give you the date for your diaries 22 April 2017, Bradford Grammar School.

Other dates for your diaries: Bradford and District A.G.M. 2017, to be held at Cleckheaton Masonic Hall, Whitcliffe Road, on 10 May and the Sunday lunch, same venue, 26 March 2017.

A good evening was had by all, smile, be happy and enjoy your Mark Masonry.

Huddersfield, Halifax and Districts Installed Masters Association Annual General meeting 2016

The 52nd Annual General Meeting of the Association took place on Tuesday, 26 April 2016 at the Masonic Hall, Slaithwaite with 38 Members and guests present, a 33% increase on last year.

A most delicious 3 course meal of Pate, Lasagne and salad followed by Crumble was eagerly despatched by the assembled company, just proves ‘tha cant ge wrong in Slawit’.  The Meeting was formally opened by the President, Worshipful Brother Andrew Daly who thanked all for their attendance particularly as the room was full, he could not have entertained more.  He had enjoyed an excellent year with numerous visits stressing that encouraging visiting was the raison d’être of the Association.  He paid tribute to the hard work of his Officers, particularly his Senior Vice and Junior Vice Presidents together with the Secretary, W.Bro. Graham Pearce and the Treasurer, W.Bro. Bev. Heywood. The point was properly made that you will only get something worthwhile out if you put something in, therefore visit and you will find you will have visitors.

The President then invested his successor wishing him a very happy and successful year in Office, the new Team being as follows:

President, W. Bro. John Madigan, Dartmouth Lodge
Senior Vice President, W. Bro. John Davis, Dewsbury Lodge
Junior Vice President W. Bro, Stephen Spooner, Peace Lodge

Bro. Graham Pearce, upon a proposition was duly confirmed as Secretary for another year, as was W. Bro. Bev Heywood, as Treasurer.

The President gave notice of the visits and events which will be detailed in the Association Calendar which, hopefully, will be to hand shortly but I can confirm that a Sunday Lunch will be held at Slaithwaite on 2 April 2017. He also acknowledged that the Huddersfield, Halifax and Districts Installed Masters Association does not have its own Constitution and that he intends to form a Committee to remedy in the next 12 months. R.W. Bro. Steggles pointed out that both Leeds and the South Yorkshire Associations already possess the document and suggested that they be contacted for assistance. Incidentally, a big disappointment that there were no representatives from any other Association present.  Next year’s A.G.M. will be held at Dewsbury Masonic Hall on the 24 April 2017, the Monday after Provincial Grand Lodge, good timing.

The Provincial Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother James Steggles G. M.R.A.C., who was accompanied by  the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Worshipful Brother Richard Boswell Puttrell and the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Worshipful Brother Dr. Rod Taylor, then addressed the meeting.   In summary he congratulated the new President, W. Bro. John and his Team and trusted that they would have a happy and successful year together. The subject of Masters in the Chair visiting Lodges was mentioned with the Provincial Grand Master reminding all that it is a prime responsibility of a Masters in the Chair to represent their Lodge not only around the Installed Masters Association, but also the Province and the Annual General Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge of West Yorkshire to be held at Bradford on Saturday, 22 April 2017. Perhaps they could also be joined by their Senior and Junior Wardens; I nurture the hope that if I say this enough times that there will be a significantly higher response in 2017.

South Yorkshire Association of Installed Masters

Once again 51 Mark Master Masons attended the Annual General Meeting of the South Yorkshire Association of Installed Masters which took place on Wednesday, 2 September, at Tapton Masonic Hall. It was a particular pleasure to see two Mark Masons present, some encouragement that the message is getting through that all Mark Masons are welcome, not only Installed Masters. Additionally, representatives from both the Leeds and District and the Huddersfield, Halifax & Districts Installed Masters Associations also attended.

The Meeting was formally opened by the President, W.Bro. Jim Stanley and, after the usual formalities, sadly including a number in the obituary report, he gave his address.  W. Bro. Jim visited widely throughout his year, including Lodges in Sister Associations and their A.G.M’s.  He thanked the Brethren of the Association in accompanying him on his ‘missionary work’ and encouraged all to give the same support to his successor.  W.Bro. Mike Nowell then gave his Secretary’s report with particular reference to Worshipful Brother David Marcus who, as Assistant Secretary has been a rock for the Association in compiling the Annual Diary. He is now to take a well earned retirement and the thanks of all go to David, and his very supportive wife Margaret, for their sterling efforts over many years.

In his address, the Provincial Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother James Steggles, G.M.R.A.C. began by congratulating W.Bro.James Reynolds, the President, and the rest of the team upon their appointments, with a particular reference to the Secretary, W.Bro. Michael Nowell for all his efforts and he wished them all a happy and successful year. He also warmly thanked W.Bro. Jim Stanley for all he had accomplished during his stewardship, mindful of the fact that he also had Provincial and Charity responsibilities, well done W.Bro. Jim (but his golf has suffered!).  In reminding the meeting that the Annual Meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons, West Yorkshire will take place at Bradford on Saturday, 2 April 2016, he requested that as many Brethren be encouraged to attend as possible and to that end, as Masters in the Chair would probably be in attendance, perhaps they could each bring along one of their Junior Brethren, excellent idea. Experience suggests that once they have been present, they then return.

Finally,  he informed the meeting that Lodges as well as individuals could be Mark benevolent Fund  Gold Award Patrons  and that one Lodge has achieved this distinction, more detail to come forward in due course. This would greatly assist the West Yorkshire Mark Benevolent Fund Festival, to be launched in 2016, culminating in 2023. Any ideas for fund raising efforts would be well received, personal donations are to continue to be passed to the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust where gift aid can be claimed, though this does not apply to the Festival which is not a registered Charity
