Huddersfield, Halifax and Districts Installed Masters Association Annual General meeting 2016

The 52nd Annual General Meeting of the Association took place on Tuesday, 26 April 2016 at the Masonic Hall, Slaithwaite with 38 Members and guests present, a 33% increase on last year.

A most delicious 3 course meal of Pate, Lasagne and salad followed by Crumble was eagerly despatched by the assembled company, just proves ‘tha cant ge wrong in Slawit’.  The Meeting was formally opened by the President, Worshipful Brother Andrew Daly who thanked all for their attendance particularly as the room was full, he could not have entertained more.  He had enjoyed an excellent year with numerous visits stressing that encouraging visiting was the raison d’être of the Association.  He paid tribute to the hard work of his Officers, particularly his Senior Vice and Junior Vice Presidents together with the Secretary, W.Bro. Graham Pearce and the Treasurer, W.Bro. Bev. Heywood. The point was properly made that you will only get something worthwhile out if you put something in, therefore visit and you will find you will have visitors.

The President then invested his successor wishing him a very happy and successful year in Office, the new Team being as follows:

President, W. Bro. John Madigan, Dartmouth Lodge
Senior Vice President, W. Bro. John Davis, Dewsbury Lodge
Junior Vice President W. Bro, Stephen Spooner, Peace Lodge

Bro. Graham Pearce, upon a proposition was duly confirmed as Secretary for another year, as was W. Bro. Bev Heywood, as Treasurer.

The President gave notice of the visits and events which will be detailed in the Association Calendar which, hopefully, will be to hand shortly but I can confirm that a Sunday Lunch will be held at Slaithwaite on 2 April 2017. He also acknowledged that the Huddersfield, Halifax and Districts Installed Masters Association does not have its own Constitution and that he intends to form a Committee to remedy in the next 12 months. R.W. Bro. Steggles pointed out that both Leeds and the South Yorkshire Associations already possess the document and suggested that they be contacted for assistance. Incidentally, a big disappointment that there were no representatives from any other Association present.  Next year’s A.G.M. will be held at Dewsbury Masonic Hall on the 24 April 2017, the Monday after Provincial Grand Lodge, good timing.

The Provincial Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother James Steggles G. M.R.A.C., who was accompanied by  the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Worshipful Brother Richard Boswell Puttrell and the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Worshipful Brother Dr. Rod Taylor, then addressed the meeting.   In summary he congratulated the new President, W. Bro. John and his Team and trusted that they would have a happy and successful year together. The subject of Masters in the Chair visiting Lodges was mentioned with the Provincial Grand Master reminding all that it is a prime responsibility of a Masters in the Chair to represent their Lodge not only around the Installed Masters Association, but also the Province and the Annual General Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge of West Yorkshire to be held at Bradford on Saturday, 22 April 2017. Perhaps they could also be joined by their Senior and Junior Wardens; I nurture the hope that if I say this enough times that there will be a significantly higher response in 2017.

With the launch of the Mark 2023 Festival next year, if brethren have any Fundraising ideas please bring them forward, they would be welcome. Some of the funding will pass through the Cleeves and Whitehead but the Trust will be protected throughout. Finally he requested that if any Brethren joining the trip to the Grand Lodge Investiture Meeting on 9 June had not made dining arrangements, to consider the Freemasons Arms which we, as a Province, utilise. There are approximately 10 spare seats and, sadly if we do not use it, we run a serious risk of losing it, please bear that in mind.

A most enjoyable evening was had by all.

After a very pleasant meal of Soup, Gammon, Egg, chips, mushrooms & peas followed by apple pie (very reminiscent of Fearnley RAM without the Bread), the Meeting was formally opened by the President, W.Bro. Richard Brooke.  He had enjoyed an excellent year with numerous visits and thanked his Officers, particularly his Senior Vice and Junior Vice Presidents, both of whom were moving upward, the Secretary, W.Bro. Graham Pearce and the Treasurer, W.Bro. Bev. Heywood, who sadly could not be present.

He had also been pleased to oversee the introduction of change in the Stewardship of the Provincial Grand Lodge meeting which now resided within the purview of the Installed Masters Associations.  With HHDIMA being the first in line, all had appeared to go well at this year’s meeting, with sufficient volunteers to ensure smooth running.  He strongly made the point that he felt that the Association should support Lodges when candidates were being advanced, this would enhance the experience for the candidate and emphasise the harmonious and supportive nature of Mark Masonry.

The Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. James Steggles, then addressed the meeting congratulating W.Bro. Clive and his team and paying tribute to the excellent work by W.Bro. Richard Brooke during his period in office; particularly the success of the Provincial Grand Lodge stewardship initiative.  He also stressed that there remained much to do to ensure the continued health of the Fraternity.  It was particularly necessary for Masters of Lodges to recognise their responsibility to represent their Lodges at Association visits, Installations and other important meetings.  In my experience there has been a significant drop of in the last two years in this regard.

A most enjoyable evening was had by all.
