Another successful Lunch was held at Tapton Hall, Sheffield on Monday, 3 November, when the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust were hosts to some 120 guests, accompanied by no less than 77 helpers consisting of Lodge Almoners, Charity Stewards and members of Lodges acting as chauffeurs. In addition two coaches brought guests from the Leeds and Bradford areas. We were particularly pleased to have a group of eight residents from Connaught Court together with three Carers.
The Almoners’ Lunches, two per annum held in the Spring and Autumn are so called as it is essentially the Almoners and Charity Stewards of the 44 Mark and 21 Royal Ark Mariner Lodges who invite the older members and widows of former members to attend these events, and organise transport for the invitees. These events, together with the annual holiday to Llandudno are the jewels in the crown of the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust. The welcome was given by W.Bro. Paul F Leach, the latest member of the “Magnificent Seven”, who expressed his delight at the support given to these functions.
On arrival the participants were provided with tea or coffee, and from then on the conversations never stopped. A delightful meal which was enjoyed by all, and included menus for those having special dietary requirements was prepared and served by the staff of Tapton Hall. At the end of the meal the Provincial Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother James Steggles announced that Very Worshipful Brother Michael J Littlewood, who had organised the lunches since 2002, was to hand over the responsibility of future events to Worshipful Brother Anthony B Hobson, a former member of the Charity Executive. The famous “Clipboard”, which Michael has used over the past twelve years, was passed over to Tony to ensure that the success of the Lunches would continue into the future.
At three o’clock everyone departed on their homeward journeys, fully satisfied that the day had been another huge success. We are thankful to report that on this occasion the two members of the St John Ambulance team, who continue to provide a free service to the Lunches, were themselves able to enjoy the day without being required to provide any of their expert services.
The next Lunch is to be held at the Cedar Court Hotel on Monday 13 April 2015.
