In the words of Tina Turner, ‘simply the best’ and yes I have said similar about Wharfedale in the past but at his Advancement Ceremony, they excelled themselves. Astonishing for a Lodge that has been in a bit of a downward spiral for a few years but is enjoying a renaissance with Worshipful Brother Ian Cotton in the Chair; one has to concentrate at times for he is Scottish you know. Two candidates in the bag, sadly neither able to make this meeting but the candidate, Brother Jeremy Anderson was in attendance and there was work to do.
W.Bro Ian opened the Lodge and welcomed the current Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Worshipful Brother Trevor Bolton and one of his predecessors, Worshipful Brother John Fred Clough. The stage set, Bro. Jeremy was in the safe hands of the Senior and Junior Deacons, Worshipful Brothers Andrew Wright and John Sullivan who steered him faultlessly through the process, the former is coming on and could be an A.P.G.M in the future, perhaps the Craft!. Obligated by W.Bro.Ian, he then processed to the Overseers who were virtual perfection with a hint of the dramatic by Bro.Philip Denison as Master Overseer; the Signs and Secrets communicated in exemplary fashion by Worshipful Brother Terry Dudley.
All finally culminating in the Senior Warden, Worshipful Brother Andrew Simpson investing Bro.Jeremy with the apron and jewel, explanation provided and the working tools followed by Worshipful Brother John Colwell, who had the honour of delivering the most meaningful piece of Masonic ritual in Freemasonry, the Conclusion in the advancement ceremony. These words that all should use to guide their footsteps through life, “Do justice, love mercy, practice charity, maintain harmony and endeavour to live in brotherly love”; it is through adherence to these precepts that we shall make ‘Better Me of Men and Better Mark Masons of Mark Masons’ Bro. Jeremy had been very attentive throughout and had obviously enjoyed proceedings which he subsequently confirmed, they also welcomed Worshipful Brother Tony Ringrose as a joining member, good times at Wharfedale now.
Before the Lodge was closed we had the pleasure of seeing W.Bro.Sam Carris. Elected member of the Charity Committee present M.B.F. Patrons Collaret to W.Bro. Andrew Simpson, onwards and upwards to Gold.
Time was now pressing and the festive board eagerly consumed, copious amounts of rice pudding for some present, whom I will not name but will if encouraged with a pint. The Director of Ceremonies, W.Bro.Stuart Prince now came into his own and whilst it was of the order of 9.35 before he started the toasts, he completed them by 10.15, well done. That to the Candidate was submitted by the W.M. who told us that Jeremy had been in the Royal Navy for more than thirty years rising to the dizzy heights of Lieutenant Commander, obviously a very talented man. He became a Freemason in 2001, joined Chapter in 2009 and has now made the most important step on his Masonic ladder by joining the Mark. Responding Bro. Jeremy said that he particularly enjoyed the examination of the stones although it made him feel like a schoolboy, well they you are Brethren, It does work!!
Brethren Smile, be happy, we are all Mark Master Masons.
