Graceful, definitely because this was the day, 2 years after he was Installed as Worshipful Master of the Lodge of Caldene M.M.M. No. 501, that Worshipful Brother Peter Grace, the Worshipful Master, vacated the seat. Apparently he was also the Worshipful Master in Prince George Craft Lodge No. 308, he either has an unhealthy love of the particular Chair at Bottoms or it just takes him a year or so to get up to speed.
No matter he has most certainly acquitted himself superbly at Caldene and the Installation was no exception. The opening formalities were despatched with ease and upon a report, distinguished visitors were admitted. This was the debut of the Provincial Grand Junior Warden, Worshipful Brother Michael Frank Holmes accompanied by Worshipful Brother Sam Cariss, Elected Member of the Charity Committee.
A short form Installation then took place, the Worshipful Master Elect being Worshipful Brother Simon Smith, who perfectly recited his obligation, was invested with his Collar and Jewel, then Installed in the Chair of the Lodge. This was a team event, the work being shared by a number of experienced Mark Master Masons. Notably these were the Addresses, to the Worshipful Master by W. Bro. Mick Jessop. The Wardens, W. Bro Tony Mackrell, the Overseers W. Bro. David Kelly and the Brethren, W. Bro. Michael Holmes, not forgetting the Tools by W. Bro. Ken Lambshead and Keystone Collarette by W. Bro. David Leach , all delivered to virtual perfection, congratulations to all who took part, it was a pleasure to be present.
The Festive board was a braised steak, cooked to perfection and very satisfying. In his response to the Toast to the Province, eloquently presented by W. Bro. Lambshead, W. Bro. Holmes emphasised the desire of our Provincial Grand Master to see as many Brethren as possible at the Annual Meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Province of West Yorkshire This takes place at Bradford Grammar School on Saturday, 22nd April 2017. Perhaps, in the knowledge that all Worshipful Masters will attend, they could be joined by their Wardens and some Brethren. It is also recommended that all Brethren use their individual Mark in then Lodge Register; this is a key message from the Mark Demonstration Teams which are available to visit Lodges. W. Bro. Michael admitted that this had been his first visit to Bottoms and had taken him 3 hours from his home in Sheffield, hope that you got home a little quicker than that, W. Bro. Michael
In time honoured tradition a cheque for £501 was presented to the Charity Representative, W. Bro. Sam Cariss by the Charity Steward, W. Bro. Ken Lambshead. W. Bro. Sam thanked the Lodge for their generosity and assured them that it would be delivered to the Festival Committee as soon as possible. He was at pains to stress that the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust continued it’ s good work, an Almoners Luncheon will take place In November, Monday 7th and the Annual Holiday will again take place in Llandudno in 2017. In the meantime, the needs of Brethren both present and past, their relatives and dependents will be attended as required but it is important to repeat a disturbing statistic, the number of Brethren contributing by standing order to the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust still remains at 28% of the membership. Brethren it was at this level when I was Chairman of Trustees7 years ago. Please search your hearts, and your pockets, this is your Charity and it is the Jewel in the Crown of our Province, polish it up with a regular Donation
There is no doubt that for the majority of Brethren it is a quite a journey to Caldene Lodge of M.M.M. No 501 at Bottoms but, believe me it is worth it, a wonderful evening had by all. It was good to see Worshipful Brother Rod Dyer, Worshipful Master of Fearnley Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 58 but sadly again he was the only Master in the Chair present from the Huddersfield, Halifax & districts Association of Installed Masters. He was however joined by Worshipful Brother Bernard Pacey of Temperance Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 56 in the Province of East Lancashire.
It is pleasure to be a Mark Master Mason, totally enjoyable meetings with wonderful Brethren of like mind.
W.Bro. Duncan Smith P.G.S.D.
