A Celebration of the Music of ‘Neil Diamond’

As the title implies, an evening with Neil Diamond to enjoy his fantastic music, well not exactly because this was Worshipful Brother John Whitworth at his best. W.Bro. John is well known throughout the Province for his Charitable Fund raising and 104 Guests joined him at Pontefract Masonic Hall on Saturday, 31 October.

The event was a Charity Evening in aid of the West Yorkshire Mark Benevolent Fund Festival 2023 which will be formally launched in 2016. The Mark Benevolent Fund is a registered Charity, No. 207610, and has disbursed many millions, not only to Individual Mark Master Masons, their relatives and dependents, but also major Grants to deserving Charities in the wider community. The current major project is a pledge of £2.6 million to the ‘Hope for Tomorrow’ Cancer Charity for the purchase of mobile chemotherapy units throughout the U.K.

The concert was split into two halves with John performing 34 numbers, some of them reprises, demanded by the audience. He had done some research and interspersed his performance with some interesting facts. Apparently, ‘Crackling Rosie is not, as many including myself assumed, a reference to a past lady in Neil Diamond’s life but the name of a bottle of wine. The superb number, ‘Beautiful Noise’ came about when he, and his family,  were in a New York Hotel room as a Puerto Rican festival parade past by which prompted his Daughter to comment, ‘what a beautiful noise’.

In the interval a very welcome Supper of Steak Pie, Mashed Potato and Mushy Peas was served which was delicious and a credit to John and his team at Pontefract Masonic Hall.

Finally the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, James Steggles G.M.R.A.C. was presented with a cheque for £1100 for the West Yorkshire Mark Benevolent Fund festival. He commented that the Charitable Funds raised by John now well exceed £100, 000 and he is to be congratulated for a phenomenal effort. This was apparent to all at the end of proceedings when he was clearly exhausted. He is not stopping however, this Concert was well over subscribed and he has already arranged for a repeat performance at Pontefract Masonic Hall on Saturday, 16 April 2016.  If you missed the October performance apply NOW, flyer including application form can be downloaded from the link below, tickets are already going fast and numbers are restricted to 80.

Another event titled ‘Songs of the Sixties’, the musical era of note for many of us, has been set for Saturday, 8 October 2016 again at Pontefract Masonic Hall, more details nearer the time.

An evening to remember, our thanks and appreciation to Worshipful Brother John, not forgetting Neil Diamond.
