Worshipful Brother John Whitworth is well known throughout the Province for his charitable fund raising and 86 Guests joined him at Pontefract Masonic Hall on Saturday, 8 November.
As the title indicates, the show was in two halves, the first of which involved John entertaining us with a variety of Songs from the 1960’s & 1970’s. In this he was very ably supported by Ms. Susan Clark, a 20 year old dance student from Wakefield College who also possesses a delightful and quite powerful voice or instrument as they say in the Music Business. This part of the evening ended with a few audience participation numbers, Agadoo Doo Doo for example.
All then adjourned for a very welcome supper of steak pie, mashed potato and mushy peas, but no mint sauce! A let down that I have to say. The food itself was delicious and a credit to John and his team at Pontefract.
The second half was a request section with a lengthy list of options, top of the list, Neil Diamond numbers. In my humble opinion as a long time Diamond fan, this is very much John’s forte as he executes an exceptional impression. Many of us were very pleased to hear that he is to do a tribute evening to Neil Diamond next year, which will be a sell out so get your requests for Tickets in early. Some musical favourites were performed including, ‘Bring him home’ from Les Miserable’s. Susan and John came together for some duets and she also had her own Solo section.
Finally the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master was presented with a cheque for £850, meaning that in the last 5 years John has raised in excess of £7, 500 for the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust. A very big thank you John from us all. Mention was then made of the Northern Masonic Variety Show in aid of the Craft Province of Yorkshire West Riding as part of their 2017 RMBI Festival. Notices have already gone out from the Secretariat but I do encourage you to book now for what should be a most entertaining event.
