Lightcliffe Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 715 Installation

Friday 17 October 2014 and a thoroughly enjoyable evening was experienced by the Brethren of Lightcliffe Lodge and 18 Visitors from 14 Lodges, at the Installation of Brother Denis Habergham.

The Lodge was opened in due form by the Worshipful Master, Worshipful Brother Stephen J. Turner, after which, and upon a report, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Very Worshipful Brother Robert Corfield was admitted, accompanied by Worshipful Brother, Stephen ‘Sam’ Cariss, Representative of the Charity Committee.

The Master Elect was then obligated and Installed by, initially a somewhat nervous, W.Bro. Turner. He very quickly, however, found his composure and delivered a superb ceremony with dignity and sincerity. Throughout the evening, the whole process was most professionally directed by the experienced W.Bro. John Parker, a splendid example to any aspiring Director of Ceremonies. By the way, he has done it a few times in the past, very well done, W.Bro. John.

W.Bro. Bob Andrew presented the Past Masters’ Jewel to W.Bro. Turner which transpired to be the Jewel originally presented to W.Bro. James Patterson Greenwood, a stalwart of the Lodge, in 1962. In doing so he stressed that it was not in respect of his past efforts but in anticipation of what he would continue to do for the Lodge in the future. This was warmly received by W.Bro. Stephen who said that he would treasure the Jewel and ensure that it was passed on in due course.

Apparently the Lodge had lost its caterer who had cancelled their contract and moved to Southwood. New caterers were in place and we were to receive their first offering. One of the best meals I have had for some time, this view being shared by W.Bro. Sam Carris who, as part of his diet, enjoyed a dessert of Treacle Sponge! Odd you may think, but as Sam said it stops him calling for Fish and Chips on the way home! The Toast to the Province was in the hands of W.Bro. Adrian C. Unsworth who did not let us down, with considerable praise for both V.W.Bro. Robert Corfield, Deputy Provincial Grand Master and his designated successor, also present, W.Bro. Richard Boswell Puttrell. Undoubtedly he crawled well, eloquent and just the right level of creeping!

In his response, V.W.Bro. Corfield reminded all of the successful Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge which took place in Bradford and thanked all for their attendance, over 260 Brethren being present. He also drew attention to the Mark 250 Club, monies raised going towards refurbishment costs of Provincial Furniture, and upcoming diary dates. Firstly the Provincial Sunday Lunch to take place at Greenhead Masonic Hall on 26 October, numbers are low, so he encouraged as many as possible to attend; also the Annual Church service to take place in Brighouse on the 14 December.

On behalf of the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust, W.Bro. Sam Cariss confirmed that the Defibrillators bought by the Trust were now being delivered. Although no training in their use is required (they are both idiot and Mason proof), W.Bro. Craig Kidd is undertaking visits to Lodges to give a short talk entitled ‘8 Minutes’, which deals with the actions that can be taken should anyone suffers a suspected heart attack. The Trustees are still concerned that some needy Brethren may still be under the radar. They request, therefore, that if a Brother is not attending and the Lodge are unaware of the reasons, that they are visited, not just telephoned, to ascertain the position.

Worshipful Brother Julian Holroyd, Eland Lodge No. 493, responded to the visitors Toast in a most eloquent and amusing fashion. Whilst congratulating W.Bro. Habergan he also complimented other Lodge Officers who took part, and the superb Festive Board. It was also a delight to see Worshipful Brother Douglas Fielding, Portal Lodge No. 127.  Things are beginning to improve as that is the third time recently that I have seen two Masters in the Chair at a meeting!

As ever Brethren, smile, be happy and enjoy your Mark Masonry.
