A Page returns at the House of Oldfield

An early start for the Installation of the Worshipful Master at Fearnley Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 58 on Wednesday, 9 April 2014.  We met at 3.30 p.m. for tea and coffee, scones with cream, pork pies and to the delight of the writer, pork crackling – not very healthy but a gorgeous taste.

The Lodge was opened in due form by the Worshipful Master, Worshipful Brother Brian Smart and the usual formalities were observed.  In his report regarding communications the Secretary, W.Bro. Philip Oldfield, drew attention to a notice from the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons giving details of the support being given to the charity “Hope for Tomorrow” to purchase up to 10 mobile chemotherapy vehicles – with the first being delivered in Lincolnshire in May [further details can be found on the charities pages of this web site].

Upon a report, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Very Worshipful Brother Robert Corfield was admitted together with the Elected Representative of the Charity Committee, Worshipful Brother Alan Crusher.  The Senior Warden, Worshipful Brother Brian Page P.Prov.Dep.G.Chap. was then obligated and installed in exemplary fashion (no ritual book in sight) by W.Bro. Brian Smart.  The Inner Workings having been completed, the Brethren were then requested to return, but not being immediately without, they required a very loud ‘HELLO’ from the Inner Guard, W.Bro. Edwin Philip Radford Pugh.  When they were returned a further hiatus occurred, problems in the Car park and could a Toyota driver move his car.  W.Bro. Bev Heywood, admitted to owning the vehicle but remained seated wondering what was required when W.Bro. Edwin offered him £250 for it to speed things along!!

W.Bro. Brian Page then invested his Officers, a pleasure to see that all the progressive Offices are now held by Junior Brethren, somewhat of a rarity these days.  There was then somewhat of an amusing side show when the note containing the names of those to be proposed as Auditors went missing but eventually the Director of Ceremonies, W.Bro. Mark J Kenyon restored order in that calm, professional, unruffled style he regularly displays as a Provincial Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies.

Ultimately the lodge was closed in due form but only after we had witnessed something else particularly special.  Bro. Richard M Shackleton, Junior Overseer, provided us with the Closing address or Exordium which he had taken the trouble to learn especially for the evening.  This is rarely heard on the Mark Masonic circuit and was a delight, congratulations Bro. Shackleton; with Brethren like you Fearnley Lodge of Mark Master Masons has a bright future.

In his response to the Toast to the Provincial Grand Lodge of Yorkshire West Riding, V.W.Bro. Robert Corfield, Deputy Provincial Grand Master confirmed that the take up of seats at the Provincial Grand Lodge Festive Board had been excellent, 275 in total, 75 more than last year. He also reminded all those on the visit to Grand Lodge in June to ensure that they had completed, and forwarded, their requests for dining at the Freemasons Arms, to the Deputy Provincial Grand Secretary, W.Bro. Graham Cooper.  Please do not forget, if we do not use this facility brethren we will lose it

W.Bro. Alan Crusher P.Prov.G.J.W., the representative of the charity committee, in his last duty in this role, thanked the Brethren of Fearnley Lodge of Mark master masons No. 58 for their generous donation and for their continued support for the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust.  He confirmed that agreement had been reached for the Trust to facilitate the supply of defibrillators to 28 Masonic Halls where the Mark Degree was represented and one, where there was only a Craft Lodge. This is truly something that the Brethren of the Province of West Yorkshire can be truly proud.  Whilst we hope that the need to use these devices never arises, it is reassuring to know that they are there and if just one life is saved by their availability, it will be money well spent.

A wonderful day, as always smile, be happy and enjoy your Mark Masonry.
W. Bro. Duncan Smith P.G.S.D
