The Worshipful Master, W. Bro. Michael J Wells, together with the Worshipful Brethren and Brethren of Sincerity Lodge No. 943 joined with friends to welcome back to the Lodge, V. W. Bro. Geoffrey Wall.  The date – 10 October 2013, 50 years to the day since he was advanced into the Lodge where both his Father and Uncle were members.

The Deputy Provincial Grand Master, V. W. Bro. Robert Corfield, was in attendance to make the presentation of the 50 year certificate together with a friend of long standing, Past Provincial Grand Master R. W. Bro. James Bennett Truswell.  After the opening of the Lodge and early business, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, V. W. Bro. Corfield invited V. W. Bro. Geoff onto the floor where a seat awaited him, and encouraged him to talk about his life both outside and inside Free Masonry.

V. W. Bro. Geoff it transpired had spent a period of time in the Services, notably the military police, where one of his duties was the custody of War Criminals in Germany.  He left to join the police in Sheffield but after 6 years he became disillusioned and joined Trowbridge Transport, interestingly a competitor of Truswell Haulage.  He remembered that he had been delighted to volunteer for the shuttle run to London overnight, why?  Because it paid a bonus of 9d per hour, significant when the basic rate was 3/6d per hour.  This took him to September 1959 when he left to join C K Tools, a German Company, with businesses in Sheffield and North Wales.  There he remained until August 1989 when ill health brought early retirement.

Throughout this period, V. W. Bro. Geoff also progressed in his various Masonic Orders, rising to V. W. Bro. in the Mark Degree and a member of the Charity Executive.  He recalled with some pride that the Llandudno holiday for needy Brethren was his idea and was happy to hear that it still continues to this day.  He was also the first Worshipful Commander of Portal Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners after its Consecration in June 1989.

In 1997, Geoff and Charlotte moved to the Isle of Man where he lives to this day.  Sadly after 63 years of marriage, Charlotte died in November 2012.

Unfortunately, his friend of over 50 years, W. Bro. Alan French was unable to be present due to his own ill health but had sent his good wishes for the evening.  They had been in the Territorial Army together for 18 years although in different sections.  This was an excellent evening until V. W. Bro Geoff told the assembled Brethren that this would be his last visit to Sincerity Lodge No 943.  He had recently undergone a scan and the diagnosis was confirmed that he had only 6 months to live.

A very pleasant Festive Board followed the meeting, the highlight of which was R. W. Bro. Jim Truswell‘s memories of Mrs. Charlotte Wall walking across the yard to pay the coal bill and making instant Gentlemen of the workers in the yard.  The spirits of the Brethren were then raised by a very enthusiastic rendition of ‘Happy have we met’ with V. W. Bro. Geoff Wall, enjoying every word. V. W. Bro. Geoff you will be in our prayers.
