Annual Inter-Provincial Golf Match

West Yorkshire vs North and East Yorkshire

The Annual Inter Provincial Golf Match against our Friends from the North & East Province was played this year at Cleckheaton and District Golf Club, on Thursday 12 September.

The North & East Provincial team were represented by the Provincial Grand Master, R. W. Bro. Eric Roy Gore-Brown and the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, V. W. Bro. Neil Woodward.  They were welcomed to the venue by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master of the Province of West Yorkshire, V. W. Bro. Robert Corfield.  The Provincial Grand Master, R. W. Bro. James Steggles accompanied by the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W. Bro. John Fred Clough, joined the party later in the afternoon.

Following a light lunch, the teams tee’d off at 1.30pm, on a surprisingly very sunny day.  The individual matches were very keenly fought and, although many had not played the course before, the scoring was excellent.  At the end, the last match was halved on the last green with the final putt by W. Bro. David Fisher, which meant that the Province of North & East Yorkshire retained the Trophy.

At the dinner that followed, the Provincial Grand Master, R. W. Bro. James Steggles, praised the teams for another well fought contest and the effort put in by the West Yorkshire team.  He was, however, disappointed that in his first year as Provincial Grand Master he had to concede that the Trophy had to remain with the Province of North & East Yorkshire by virtue of the overall match being halved.  He expressed the hope that a rather different result would be forthcoming in 2014.  R. W. Bro. Eric Gore-Brown then presented V. W. Bro. Robert Corfield with an apple (humble) pie which was enthusiastically received; but it would be nice to return the gesture next year!

Whilst the majority of the participants were appropriately attired it has to be reported that an Ian Poulter look alike surfaced.  As can be seen from the photograph this was W. Bro. Alex Steele, the Provincial Almoner.  He takes his duties very seriously but I think I should remind him that when he visits Oxfam shops for bargains, he need not buy items for himself!!!!  I have to acknowledge, however, that he does look the part and that he can play – well at least he beats me.
