Thursday the 13 September was the day of our annual match against the Mark Province of North and East Yorkshire.
The venue was the Driffield Golf Club, the course was in excellent condition but the greens were a little tricky, to say the least, there were some notable absentees this year due to other commitments and holidays but thanks to a couple of last minute stand-ins a strong team went out to battle.
The West Yorks side consisted of Jim Gray, Brian Addy, Alan Gilby, George Herd, Alan Pendleton, Alex Steele, David Fisher, Nigel Scott, Alan Morson, David Wadley Ian Gow and Mike Mercer, fortunately for the team the golfing talents of Bob Corfield were not required. The weather was kind with just a light shower in the afternoon but with a reasonably strong wind.
After an excellent lunch of soup and sandwiches battle commenced, as usual the match was very closely fought, and with the North East well up in two and West Yorkshire up in two, the result was going to be down to the remaining two matches. Once again it was a cliff hanger, managing a half in the first, the match rested on the final four ball on the 18th green, even with the support of our Provincial Grand Master and Philip Birch, it was not to be our day as we lost on the last hole. The result North and East 3.5 West Yorks 2.5 matches.
Refreshed by a shower and drink, an excellent dinner was enjoyed by all, after which the beautiful Ridings Cup was presented to W Bo Neil Woodward captain of the North and East.
Thanks must go to the Driffield Golf Club for producing an excellent day and we look forward to next year on home territory.
