Oakdale Golf Club, Oakdale Moor, Harrogate Thursday 3rd September 2009
The combination of the threat from the North and East team and a very, very windy day at The Oaks in Harrogate, the venue for the annual match, led to an extremely nervous West Yorkshire team.
So the twelve just men from West Yorkshire (or should that be just twelve men) assembled on the first tee. W Bro Bob Corfield was there to give his best wishes to each player and wished us all the best of bounces and good fortune.
Playing a better ball match with each player off his club handicap, the match was under way. The first team were soon under a great deal of pressure being five down at the turn and, as if prompted by the golfing gods, W Bro J Steggles and W Bro J F Clough appeared on the 10th tee to give support. Unfortunately, it was too late for our first pair. Word soon spread round the West Yorkshire team that we needed some divine inspiration. W Bro Bob then informed us that the PGM was on his way to the club and this year he did not want to go home empty handed having lost to the North and East for the last couple of years. This was just the inspiration that we needed.
The match progressed and at no time did any team know how each pair were doing. It could have been nip and tuck for all they knew! Approaching the last green, all the West Yorkshire Grand Officers appeared behind a window in the club house overlooking this water protected green with the pin only a few yards from the hazard. Each officer was miming the words “How you doing?” together with thumbs up, down signs.
West Yorkshire won 3.5 to 2.5.
