The Provincial Grand Master then directed the Provincial Grand Secretary to read the Patent of Appointment, after which he addressed the Deputy Provincial Grand Master Designate as follows:

“V.W.Bro. Brian Addy, Past Grand Junior Overseer, you were advanced into Truth Mark Lodge Number 137 on the 20th January 1977 and after serving in all Offices became its Master in November 1989. During this period you became a founder member of Beaumont Mark Lodge No 1523 in 1979, then being Installed as its Master in 1984.

Your obvious administrative ability and dedication to the Order were soon recognised by the Province and you joined the Executive in 1989, first as Assistant Secretary then later the same year as Provincial Grand Secretary, a post you filled with distinction until your appointment as Assistant Provincial Grand Master some 5 years ago. A further high point in Mark Masonry was achieved on the 21st October last year, when you were proudly Installed as Worshipful Master of the prestigious Provincial Grand Secretaries Lodge. You have demonstrated a similar love and zeal for Royal Ark Mariner Masonry since your elevation into Truth Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No 137 in 1978 and your occupation of the chair of Hipperholme Royal Ark Mariner Lodge Number 715 in 1995.

Notwithstanding your commitment to our Orders you have given unstinting service to your Craft Lodge, Unity Number 3930 since your initiation in 1974 and indeed continue to hold high Office in that Lodge. You are a Past Provincial Grand Officer of Yorkshire West Riding. Likewise you continue to support with vigour your other great love Golf, still maintaining a handicap of 10, along with tinkering with computers, gardening and foreign travel, to keep yourself well occupied.

Very Worshipful Brother Brian Addy, for the past 18 years you have served this Province tirelessly, you are well qualified for the Office of Deputy Provincial Grand Master and fully familiar with the duties the Office involves. I therefore, now formally enquire, are you ready and willing to undertake those duties”.

V.W.Bro Addy replied in the affirmative.

The Grand Chaplain offered prayer.

The Deputy Provincial Grand Master Designate advanced and took a solemn obligation with regard to his office.

The Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. James Bennett Truswell, then Invested the Deputy Provincial Grand Master Designate, following which he was then conducted to his seat by the Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies. The Deputy Provincial Grand Master, V.W.Bro. Brian Addy, P.G.J.O. was then Proclaimed and saluted with five, under the direction of the Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies, as follows:

“Be it known that:

BRIAN ADDY

Past Provincial Grand Registrar in the Province of Yorkshire West Riding in the United Fraternity of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of England; Past Grand Junior Overseer and Holder of Grand Rank in the Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariners; etc., etc., has this day been Appointed, Obligated, Invested and Installed Very Worshipful Deputy Provincial Grand Master of West Yorkshire in the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of England and Wales and its Districts and Lodges Overseas and the Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariners, whom, may the Great Overseer and Supreme Commander of the Universe long preserve, and I call upon you to salute him as Deputy Provincial Grand Master with five taking the time with me”.

V.W.Bro. Addy thanked the Brethren for their salutations and wished them all well.

The Deputy Grand D.C. then enquired of the Provincial Grand Master whom he wished to appoint as Assistant Provincial Grand Master. R.W.Bro. Truswell announced the appointment of W.Bro. Robert Corfield, P.G.J.D. to be Assistant Provincial Grand Master. The Deputy Grand D.C. then formed an escort of the following Masters of Lodges and Brethren of the Province: W.Bro. J.B. Fish, 651 and Bro. I. Truswell, 651 (Cushion Bearers), W.Bro. G.G. Foster, 137, and W.Bro. R.E. Wilkinson, T.I. The Procession then retired to re-enter the Lodge introducing the Assistant Provincial Grand Master Designate. The Provincial Grand Master then directed the Provincial Grand Secretary to read the Patent of Appointment, after which he addressed the Assistant Provincial Grand Master Designate as follows:

“W Bro Robert Corfield, Past Grand Junior Deacon, your introduction to Freemasonry was your Initiation into Hall Cross Lodge No 5744, in the Province of Yorkshire West Riding in December 1977. After serving every Office on the ladder of the Lodge you were Installed into the chair in 1989. You currently hold the Office of Director of Ceremonies. You also had the added pleasure of initiating your son into the Lodge in 2005. Your work in the Craft subsequently led to Acting Provincial Office, thus qualifying you for membership of the West Riding Acting Officers Lodge No 9645 of which you are also the current Director of Ceremonies. You were exalted into the Royal Arch at Bawtry Chapter No 5174 in 1994, receiving Provincial Honours last year. You are also a member of other Orders in Masonry; namely the Rose Croix and Red Cross.

Your advancement into Danum Mark Lodge No 398 in 1979 marked the start of your service to Mark Masonry in general and to West Yorkshire in particular. In this Province, as well as membership of Danum Mark you are a founder member of Aireferry No 1769.  In the Province of Lincolnshire you are a member of Haven 1732 and Hoveden 1681, and in the Province of North and East Yorkshire the Sir William Crosthwaite Lodge 1671. Being an enthusiastic motorcyclist you quite recently became a founder of the Joey Dunlop Lodge 1811 the new motorcyclist Lodge and of course, being a Past Grand Steward, you are a member of the Grand Stewards’ Lodge.

You have shown similar commitment to the Royal Ark Mariner Order, being a member of Seven Royal Ark Mariner Lodges spread over three Provinces, those in West Yorkshire being Thorne No 1004 in which you were elevated in 1984, Portal No 127 and of course the Carl Whitehead Lodge No 110.

As well as your commitment to these individual Lodges, in many of which you have occupied the chair, your service to our Province has been exemplary, being a member of the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies team, serving our Charity as its representative at Installation Meetings throughout the Province for the last 10 years and organizing memorable social functions for the Province and its Charity.

Worshipful Brother Robert Corfield it is my opinion that you are indeed well qualified for the Office of Assistant Provincial Grand Master and I am confident you will discharge the duties of that Office with enthusiasm and integrity. It is however necessary, for me to formally enquire, if you are ready and willing to undertake the duties of the Office”.

W.Bro. Corfield replied in the affirmative.

The Grand Chaplain offered prayer.

The Assistant Provincial Grand Master Designate advanced and took a solemn obligation with regard to his office.

The Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. James Bennett Truswell, then Invested the Assistant Provincial Grand Master Designate, following which he was then conducted to his chair by the Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies. The Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Robert Corfield, P.G.J.D., was then Proclaimed and saluted with five under the direction of the Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies, as follows:

“Be it known that:

ROBERT CORFIELD

Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden in the Province of Yorkshire West Riding in the United Fraternity of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of England; Past Provincial Grand Standard Bearer in the Province of Yorkshire West Riding in the Supreme Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of England; Past Grand Junior Deacon and Holder of Grand Rank in the Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariners; etc., has this day been Appointed, Obligated, Invested and Installed Worshipful Assistant Provincial Grand Master of West Yorkshire in the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of England and Wales and its Districts and Lodges Overseas and the Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariners, whom, may the Great Overseer and Supreme Commander of the Universe long preserve, and I call upon you to salute him as Assistant Provincial Grand Master with five taking the time with me”.

W.Bro. Corfield thanked the Brethren for their salutations and wished them all well.

The Grand Director of Ceremonies presented the By-laws of Provincial Grand Lodge to the Provincial Grand Master for his approval and confirmation. He then asked the Provincial Grand Master if he would confirm the appointment of the Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge who were appointed at the last Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge. The Provincial Grand Master was pleased to so confirm.

The Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. James Bennett Truswell, then addressed the Pro Grand Master, M.W.Bro. John Hale as follows:

“Most Worshipful Pro. Grand Master and Installing Officer, the Brethren of our Province well remember, with much affection, your visit last October when you joined us in our own celebration, held at the Leeds Armouries, of the 150th anniversary of the formation of Mark Grand Lodge. The Brethren of West Yorkshire and I now thank you once more, not only for making time available in your busy schedule to travel to West Yorkshire again, but for the excellent and truly delightful manner in which you have Installed me today.

May I also be permitted Sir, through you, to thank your Assisting Officers, many of whom have also travelled long distances, for the exemplary manner in which they have undertaken their ceremonial duties under the guidance of the Grand Director of Ceremonies. Likewise for the wholehearted co-operation our Provincial Grand Secretary has received from the Grand Secretary and his team in making the arrangements for this Especial Meeting. Brethren, please show your appreciation”.

The Pro Grand Master, M.W.Bro. John Hale, together with his Assisting Officers, retired in Procession.

The Provincial Grand Master then addressed Provincial Grand Lodge as follows:

“Brethren, I now have the opportunity to offer my sincere thanks to all of you for attending today. Also publicly, to say thank you for the many letters, cards, emails and telephone calls expressing congratulations and good wishes not only to me personally, but also to my Deputy and Assistant. Brethren they are much appreciated. Now, may I somewhat belatedly, on your behalf extend a warm welcome to our Distinguished Guests at this Especial Meeting of ours today. Regretfully, however, the time available to us does not allow me to introduce them individually to you.

Brethren, during the past few years I have formed valued friendships amongst colleagues from other Mark Provinces. I thank these Right Worshipful, Very Worshipful and Worshipful Brethren, not only for their friendship and presence here today, but also for the tremendous continuing support they give to this Province. W.Bro. Kenneth Wilson, Deputy Provincial Grand Master of Cumberland and Westmorland, we are saddened to hear of the sudden death of your Provincial Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother Ken Graham on Thursday. Please accept the sincere condolences of this Province. Likewise we are privileged to have the support of many present and past Rulers for and of the Craft Province of Yorkshire West Riding. This support by the Craft is much valued and can only enhance the excellent relationships forged between the Craft and Mark by my predecessors. I thank these worthy Brethren for their attendance; it is so much appreciated.

Past and present Rulers of the Royal Arch and many other Orders and Degrees in Freemasonry are also with us; we thank them and extend to them our best wishes for their continued success.

I extend special thanks to the Host Mark Lodges, Old York T.I., Aries 669, Wharfedale 1027 and White Rose 1067, together with Old York T.I. R.A.M. Lodge, under the guidance of Keith Robinson and Andrew Jagger; to Keith Robson and Malcolm Mackown and their reliable team of Bar Stewards who will be working all day, and also to the Cushion Bearers, Escorts and the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies and his Deputies. I particularly thank the Provincial Grand Secretary Jim Steggles, his Deputy Alan Oldfield and rest of the team for the truly tremendous amount of work they have diligently undertaken, which has so greatly assisted in making today such a success.

Brethren of West Yorkshire, I am very proud to have been appointed your Provincial Grand Master. I have the honour of succeeding the thirteen worthy and illustrious former holders of this Office. I am fortunate, not only to have the wise council of my immediate predecessor R.W.Bro. Brian M. Batty available to me, but also that of Past Provincial Grand Masters, R.W.Bro. J. Bramley Morley and R.W.Bro. G.H. Philip Birch. Three worthy Brethren, for whom I have the greatest respect.

I fully realise, that due to restricted dining availability, that many of you are not able to attend the Luncheon and for this I sincerely apologise.

Brethren, I once more thank you for your attendance at this Especial Meeting today, for your magnificent support over the years and for your good wishes to me personally. I do appreciate it so much. I pledge that I will use my best endeavours to maintain this wonderful Province of ours for the benefit and happiness of its Brethren and their dependants.  God bless you all and Mark Well“.

There being no other business, Provincial Grand Lodge was closed in due form at 12.22 pm. Following the singing of the National Anthem, The Provincial Grand Master retired in Procession.
